What Is the Tampax Pearl Lawsuit?
The Tampax Pearl lawsuit refers to a growing number of legal claims filed against Procter & Gamble, alleging the company failed to disclose that its Tampax-branded tampons contain toxic heavy metals including lead, arsenic, and cadmium, as well as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) commonly called "forever chemicals."
These lawsuits gained momentum following a peer-reviewed study published in Environment International in July 2024 by researchers at UC Berkeley, which detected 16 different metals — including lead — in tampons from 14 major brands sold in the U.S. and EU. The study raised serious concerns about vaginal absorption of toxic metals, as vaginal tissue is highly permeable and allows substances to enter the bloodstream without first passing through the liver.
Plaintiffs allege that Procter & Gamble knew or should have known about the contamination and failed to warn consumers. The cases include claims for negligence, breach of warranty, fraud, and violations of state consumer protection statutes.
